The Cleobury Mortimer Footpath Association (CMFA) was formed in 1990 . The Association was a founding member (1993) of Shropshire’s Parish Paths Partnerships (P3) programme - now one of a large number of volunteer groups that provide a vital contribution to the maintenance of public rights of way for County Council on a voluntary basis.

In the case of the Cleobury Mortimer group they are not only dedicated to maintaining footpaths but to working with local landowners to restore many little-used rights of way.

As well as clearing and maintaining footpaths, CMFA replaces and puts in stiles, gates, fingerposts, marker posts etc… to make footpaths more accessible. Over the last 20+ years we have been successful in developing over 300 miles of footpath routes into 50 circular walks starting from the Town Centre and, more recently, from other local centres. In 1998 it undertook, as a Millennium Project, the development of the area’s first long distance pathway, the Simon Evans Way, which was officially opened in July 2000. It is an 18 mile journey which highlights the beauty of South Shropshire along the Rea Valley. We have also stimulated and helped the development of a cross-country Shropshire Way eastern extension from the Clee Hills, passing through Cleobury Mortimer to link up with the  Severn Way near Highley.

CMFA  continues to form an important part of Shropshire’s ROW programme which maintains over 8,500 paths covering some 3000 miles - making these more accessible to both local people and visitors alike.

The group has also produced a number of guides to walks in the area:  see Walks Leaflets page

and  supports  the Walking for Health initiative with a range of shorter walks - both regular-led walks and self-guided - see the foot of our Walking for Health page

We welcome new members - the subscription is low (Adults £5.00, under 18's free) and the Association has built up a reputation as one of the more active societies within the town.

You don’t need to be a member to join us on our monthly Country Walks which are meant for the general public, but we do ask you to join to take part in the longer and more wide ranging Social Walks. You need to be a member to join the Workparties for insurance reasons.

We meet as a whole group once a quarter to review our key activities and plan new initiatives.
